While the hashtag part of the #MeatlessMonday moniker is certainly a more recent addition, the origin on of the concept itself actually goes back to WWI where – along with “Wheatless Wednesdays” – North Americans were encouraged to do their part to help with the war effort by reducing their consumption of these staples. Today, the #MeatlessMonday movement is gaining traction once again as a healthy dietary choice that’s good for the planet – and for some – rooted in ethical beliefs around farming livestock for food. From my perspective – to each their own. I admire people with strong convictions who put their words into action by living the values they espouse. All this said, my focus today is on a collection of our all-time favourite meatless recipes and, of course, the perfect wine pairing for each of these 5 tasty temptations.

Our earlier feature piece – 7 Insider Tips on Matching Wine With Vegetarian Fare – takes a more in-depth look at ways to match up richer and more full-flavoured wines. That said, in keeping with the “weeknight recipe” vibe of this piece, we wanted to introduce some wines offering incredible value through new discoveries, in addition a few more comfortable and widely known classic wines.
