[ Why We Love It: ]
Grown in Spain’s most famous and widely exported wine-producing region, this brilliant, modern and captivating expression of Rioja delivers bold, ripe red and black fruit flavours and spicy complexity – a perfect partnership producing a style of red wine offering the ideal match for hearty cold weather fare. Coming from the vineyards in lower altitude portions of the Rioja, this wine delivers a somewhat more modern or “New World” inspired profile with oodles of fruit and rich extract, offering a marked counterpoint to the more age-worthy cellaring reds grown in the Rioja Alta. That said, with a few years in both barrel and bottle ahead of its release to market, you’ll find this wine well integrated and immensely pleasurable for near to mid term drinking. At this price, you’ll want to grab a few bottles to enjoy over the coming weeks and months. The burst of Spanish sunshine you’ll experience in each glass of this precocious red will make those long and cold December and January evenings here in Canada just a little more bearable.

[ Tasting Notes: ]
“This blend of Tempranillo and Garnacha is sourced from vineyards planted at altitudes of 700 metres on the foothills of the low-lying Sierra de Yerga mountains. Viña Herminia is emerging as a real leader in the Rioja, and the value and quality of their wines have attracted increased international acclaim. The 2009 Excelsus was awarded a rating of 93 points and was ranked #39 on the Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2013. This is a winery to watch.”
