[ Why We Love It: ]
This is a smooth, rich and velvety red from the Rioja Alavesa district of the Rioja. Through the 1980s, we saw the introduction of more “modern” or new-world inspired wines in various parts of the Rioja and Cosme Palacio was one of the producers leading this trend. With the introduction and use of French oak barrels (rather than the more traditional American oak) the resulting wines offered a certain aromatic sweetness characterized by gentler tannins, rich generous fruit and enticing aromas and flavours and vanilla, chocolate and sweet spice.
Combine these smooth and velvety flavours and textures with the local Tempranillo grape and the results here are pure magic. Tempranillo brings plenty of freshness and acidity to the final wine, helping create outstanding balance for these somewhat softer and rounder virtues emerging from the use of French oak and more modern winemaking practices. While this wine may not have the ability to age as long as more classically styled Rioja reds, you can enjoy it today with grilled meats and BBQ – or lay it down and enjoy it over the next 3-6 years.

[ Tasting Notes: ]
“This supple red offers cherry, herbal, tobacco and smoke notes. Light but well-integrated, with light tannins and lively acidity. Refreshing.”

“The wine’s aromatic complexity is impressively elegant and subtle. It releases a raft of black fruit aromas, nicely blended with overtones from ageing, which add spicy and vanilla notes against a mineral backdrop. Coats the palate with a long and well-balanced finish where the high quality of the Tempranillo grape comes through, long lingering and very elegant.”
