[ Why We Love It: ]
Riesling has a bad reputation in some circles – but offers sublime summer sipping for those in the know. If one didn’t know better, it would be easy to assume that the wine gods had summer in mind when they created this zippy and refreshing grape. Now plenty of Riesling is made with a touch of sweetness (which is also not a bad thing) but this particular release from Mosel star Daniel Vollenweider delivers punchy and dry flavours and aromas of lime, lemon and grapefruit.
Perfect for sipping on the dock or patio all on its own, this Riesling is also a rock-star next to classic summer favourites. Try a glass of this wine with your favourite lighter seafood and white fish dishes, serve it at lunch next to bright salads, enjoy it with soft cheeses and salty munchies – or perhaps my favourite of all – with a simply pizza topped with fresh mozzarella and perfectly vine ripened heirloom tomatoes.
This wine is one of those rare finds that will deliver simple refreshment and pure drinking pleasure, while impressing the choosiest of wine lovers. From the epicentre of great Riesling in Germany’s Mosel valley, Daniel Vollenweider is part of a young dynamic generation of winemakers exciting palates around the globe with this perfect summer grape.

[ Tasting Notes: ]
“From predominantly old and ungrafted vines (up to 100+ years) on grey slate soils, the 2014 Wolfer Goldgrube Riesling offers a clear, deep and intense Riesling aroma intertwined with crushed stones flavors on the nose. Full-bodied, rich and piquant on the palate, this is a solemn, very elegant, perfectly balanced and expressive Riesling with grip, and a very long and salty finish. This is great, generous and very persistent, dry Riesling with a lot of tension, minerals and depth. The balance of residual sugar and total acidity (6.7 grams per liter each) is just perfect and I suppose this wine can age for 15 years, at least. ”
