Why We Love It:
Lopez de Heredia masterfully marries the finest grapes from very old single vineyards with the most traditional and effective methods of aging – a set of expertise acquired over generations of this family winery. Vina Bosconia covers just under 30 acres and is comprised mainly of Tempranillo (80%), Garnacha (15%) and the balance made up of Mazuelo and Graciano. The higher altitude of this vineyard (465 metres above sea level) leads to slightly cooler conditions than other lower altitude sites. The resulting wines are well structured and a touch lighter than other reds grown and produced by Lopez de Heredia.
Vina Bosconia is aged for 5 years in barrel before bottling – and then aged for another 5 years in bottle before release to market. It is rare – and a profound commitment to quality – to see any winery, especially outside of the Rioja, age any wine for this length of time ahead of release. The 2008 vintage was long and moderate, leading to a less opulent style than 2006 and 2009 vintages. As a result, this wine has excellent aromatic maturiity and complexity, and is a slow-aging edition of Vina Bosconia. While delicious now, this 12 year old red has at least another 10 to 15 years of cellaring potential.

Tasting Notes:
“Bosconia faces south and has plenty of fruit sweetness, even in a very cool Atlantic vintage like 2008. Combining Tempranillo with 20% Garnacha, Graciano and Mazuelo, it’s a delightfully subtle, traditional Rioja. Reserva that’s all about secondary and tertiary flavours and aromas rather than wood. Savoury, subtle and aromatic, with wild strawberry, tobacco and forest floor notes.”

“Taking on a balsamic and high-toned wood character to the ripe fruit on the nose. Some dried cheese and ripe fruit, too. Medium-bodied with integrated tannins that are polished and fine. Goes on for minutes. A beautiful, traditional wine, as always. Drink or hold.”
