Why We Love It:

Garmón Continental is owned by the García family (along with Bodegas Mauro and San Román Bodegas y Viñedos) demonstrating their commitment to ancestral, smallholder viticulture based on old vineyards. These sites share in common low vigour and are situated in high, cool, and continental riverside areas with a long maturity cycle. With Garmón Continental, the García family completed its unique trilogy of wineries in the Duero Valley – along with Mauro (in Tudela de Duero) and San Román (in Toro). A passionate and exclusive completely family-run vineyard project focusing on the Tempranillo/Tinto Fino variety.

Garmón is produced from a selection of 40 to 80-year-old vines grown in smallholdings in the eastern part of the Ribera del Duero region: Baños, Tubilla, La Aguilera and Anguix, on the right bank of the river; and Moradillo, on the left bank. New vines have been grown in Valbuena and Olivares since 2018.

The winery occupies an area of 2,000 square metres, distributed into different modular buildings surrounding a spacious central courtyard. In the centre of the winery lies the fermentation area with the capacity to produce 80,000 kilograms of grapes in 8.000-kilogram stainless steel vats. The grapes are gravity transferred to begin fermentation which occurs spontaneously using native yeast.

The 2019 release showcases scintillating fruitiness on the nose, with notes of liquorice and graphite and a very mineral background. Compact texture and refined tannins for a full, fleshy wine and long finish.

Tasting Notes:

“Eduardo Garcia used fruit from 6 different villages – Anguix, Banos de Valdearados, La Aguilera, Moradillo, Quintanilla de Onesimo, and Tubilla del Lago – to produce the latest vintage of this world-class red, blending their characters as an artist might mix a palette of colours. Spicy, chalky, structured yet refined with haunting perfume, subtle oak, enviable density, energy and poise and the concentration to age.”
