Why We Love It:
Produced by the Brunier family – also owners of the legendary Domaine du Vieux Telegraphe – les Pallieres is located Gigondas (a village to the north and east of Vieux Telegraphe which is located in Chateauneuf du Pape). In the past, Gigondas was viewed by many as a sort of “poor man’s” alternative to the wines of Chateauneuf du Pape. However, in recent years, as winemaking and grape growing expertise have improved in Gigondas, this southern Rhone village has begun to carve out an identity and terroir all its own. Comprised of 80% Grenache (an even higher percentage of Grenache than the signature “La Crau” Chateauneuf du Pape which contains 65%) Les Racines is grown at the extreme north edge of the Gigondas appellation at high altitude and comes from 70 year old vineyards – some of the oldest vines in the entire region. The result is an intensely spicy and structured red, full-bodied and opulent with the kind of richness and complexity that one expects from Chateauneuf du Papes at twice this price. This red brings a collection of aromatic and warm spices to the rich red and black fruit core – and offers terrific aging potential.

Tasting Notes:
“This shows the greatness that Gigondas is capable of. A huge wine, but with great structure and aromatic complexity that takes your breath away. Big black fruit, but so many herbal and savory nuances, then comes the long, smoky and meaty finish. Excellent aging potential. A blend of 80% grenache, 8% syrah, 7% cinsault and 5% clairette.”
