Wine of the Week #1542: Mr Riggs Tempranillo

Why We Love It:

Ben Riggs is one of Australia’s most accomplished and respected winemakers, and with this introduction of these self-dubbed “Mr Riggs” wines, he has – yet again – raised the bar with sublime quality, value and drinkability across the entire range. But nowhere, in my view anyways, has he managed to capture something as creative, interesting and compelling as this single vineyard Tempranillo. For starters, this isn’t a grape variety we see grown in many places outside of Spain, let alone in Australia. And what Ben has managed to capture here is an amazing balance between varietal typicity (bright, refreshing and structured) while remaining true to his deep Aussie roots and crafting a wine offering up heaps of spice and richly indulgent dark fruit. This is perfect Friday night wine – sexy, smooth and seductive, and stunning with kicked-up comfort classics like southern BBQ or meaty Asian-inspired stir-fry.

Tasting Notes:

“Silky smooth with just enough attitude to set it apart. Flavours are in the cherry-plum and cola realm, though notes of peppercorn and chocolate, as modest as they are, are important aspects of the wine’s personality. Ultra fine-grained tannin, edges of mineral and finesse through the finish are all quality markers. Medium-weight but it h has presence.”

“Violet colour. Bold, sweet, spicy herbal aromas of honeyed blueberries, menthol-mint, and mocha toffee with a silky, lively, fruity medium-to-full body and a tingling, complex, medium-long berry pie, spiced watermelon, vanilla nuts, and eucalyptus finish with crunchy tannins and light oak. A spicy tempranillo treat that is uniquely Australian.”
