Rave Review: La Rioja Alta Voted #1 Spanish Winery in Major Restaurant Survey

Wine & Spirits Magazine is one of North America’s leading publications on the drinks industry. As a part of their annual survey of more than 2,000 top restaurants, W&S asked Sommeliers for feedback on their favourite, top-performing brands.

It comes as no surprise that Spanish icon La Rioja Alta finished first amongst Spanish wineries – with two wines placing in the top-5 when the Sommelier votes were all counted. Both La Rioja Alta’s “Vina Ardanza” Reserva and Gran Reserva “904” were included amongst the top-5 most popular Spanish wines.

Building on this remarkable result, W&S Magazine also polled restaurant regulars for feedback on their favourite wines in top restaurants, and La Rioja Alta was the only Spanish winery to finish in the top-50 favourite restaurant wine brands amongst consumers.

This recognition from both industry professionals and diners in top restaurants reinforces the iconic stature of La Rioja Alta as one of Spain’s most remarkable wine producers.

Juliette Pope of Gramercy Tavern commented: “That (Vina Ardanza) is really wine of the year. I can’t believe we get to pour a ten-year-old wine that people flip for – and it’s under $20 a glass. Not too light and not too heavy. La Rioja Alta is moving 5 cases a week, easy.”
