Reviews & Tasting Notes

[ Story: ]

Bodegas Aster draws its name from the flower that blooms during harvest each year – but draws its inspiration from a desire to produce a range that competes with the finest wines of this renowned Spanish wine appellation. Established in 1991, Bodegas Aster is situated in the heart of one of Spain’s most popular and fastest growing wine regions. Here, in the northern portion of central Spain, the Ribera del Duero sits atop a high, exposed inland plateau where long dry hot summers offer a perfect mix for the production of Tempranillo based reds quite distinct from their counterparts in the Rioja.

Ribera del Duero reds offer up a take on the Tempranillo grape that is almost a bit mindful of the great Nebbiolo based reds of Piedmont for their combination of rich dark fruit, spicy earthy (almost tar like) nature with more delicate and complex sweet floral notes. The rich, generous and extracted wines produced from this warm climate are surprisingly drinkable in their youth – for those who enjoy full robust red wines – but really come into their full glory with time in the cellar. As the tannins and youthful fruit begin to soften, these wines offer the depth, concentration and complexity to reward the patience of those who enjoy mature red wines.

In a region originally made famous by producers bringing to market some of the most expensive wines in the world, the line-up at Bodegas Aster offers a welcome reprieve. This affordable range walks a perfect balance between serious cellar-worthy qualities and accessibility.

Bodegas Aster is owned by the legendary Rioja house La Rioja Alta S.A. – also owners of the masterful Albarino producer Lagar de Cervera in Rias Baixas and the single estate property Torre de Ona in the Rioja Alavesa.
