Domaine Chanson

2014 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru “Les Chenevottes”

Why We Love It:

Great barrel aged white Burgundy is one of those rare wines whose complex and balanced nature makes it a versatile and delicious choice for drinking throughout the year. Great freshness, intense and concentrated fruit flavours, lingering minerality and just a touch of of spice and smoke from barrel aging; these virtues join together creating a complete and harmonious drinking experience as pleasurable on the deck dining al fresco in August as they are next to hearty cold weather suppers on those first few snowy nights in November.

Adjacent to the very famous “Le Montrachet” vineyard, Chanson harvests this wine from a tiny 2-acre parcel in the “Les Chenevottes” 1er Cru. The eastern facing exposure of this vineyard allows for the movement of air and cool breezes, creating a markedly refreshing wine with bright acidity. A warm dry spring in 2014 lead to even flowering and fruit set, and harvest took place during a sunny Indian summer in mid to late September. The result is a wine showcasing bright citrus fruit with more subtle floral tones in the background.

Recipes & Food Pairings:

The combination of freshness and concentration in this wine make it a perfect match for rich and full flavoured foods. Think of your favourite decadent shellfish and seafood dishes, or serve it alongside white meats (chicken, pork) or rich, creamy cheeses. Tasting Notes:

“Assessed from a bottle purchased at the LCBO. At $89.95 I was concerned about this 2014. But just one sniff and I am suddenly in heaven. This 2014 Les Chenevottes is worth every penny especially for that small group of experienced wine lovers who are familiar with exactly what a gently maturing, classic, intense, complex, Chassagne-Montrachet can achieve. Located next door to Le Montrachet this surprisingly still youthful, medium straw coloured Chardonnay has an extremely intense, complex, key-lime-tinged, lemon meringue nose with toffee and buttered brioche notes plus lees-tinged, hints of warm earth. Dry, medium-full bodied, very well structured, rich and mouthfilling, the dense, ripe, lemony, key lime pie flavours balanced by vibrant acidity and a very long, lingering, toasty, still gently grippy finish. It has 13.5% alcohol and 2 g/L residual sugar with lot number B121115 on the lower part of the glass bottle. NEW in Vintages.”

Michael Vaughan – Vintage Assesments

“The first impression is of candy – how can you resist? But this is more complex, with pastry, flint, honey and waxy flavors surrounding a core of apple and lemon fruit, all backed by a vibrant structure. Lingers with minerally, leesy and pastry notes. Best from 2018 through 2028.”
