[ Why We Love It: ]

It doesn’t take a ton of expertise or insight to immediately jump on top vintages (most recently including 2005, 2009 and 2010) or to completely avoid the weaker vintages, but years falling somewhere in between – like 2011 – offer value and potential that can vary tremendously depending on the producer or site in question. The 1er Cru Beaune on offer today from Chanson is an example of a fine terroir and a producer whose well-deserved renown join forces to deliver exceptional value, good aging potential and much of the complexity, elegance and finesse one expects from a fine red Burgundy. The early harvest across much of Burgundy in 2011 lead to wines largely seen as easy-going, fruity and somewhat lighter than average. This particular site, owned by Domaine Chanson, is situated at the northern reaches of the 1er Crus of Beaune and is grown on a very gravelly and inorganic soil. Both soil profile and location contribute to a wine that ripened somewhat more slowly than average, leading to extended hang-time ahead of harvest – a key factor contributing to complexity and phenolic maturity which exceed expectations from this generally lighter and “simpler” vintage in Burgundy. Lower than average yields and gentle touch in cellar round out the story behind this red from Chanson, further contributing to a level of elegance and achievement that will impress those who enjoy the fine reds of Burgundy.

[ Tasting Notes: ]

“A background soupçon of oak highlights the cassis, plum, violet and wet stone aromas that serve as a pure, elegant and solidly complex introduction to the punchy and mineral-permeated flavors that possess a sophisticated mouth feel, in no small part thanks to the very fine-grained tannins. There is also fine complexity to the balanced, focused and impressively persistent finish. This is really very good. Outstanding. Drink: 2021+.”
