Wine of the Week #1543: Penny’s Hill “Cracking Black” Shiraz

2013 Penny’s Hill “Cracking Black” Shiraz

Why We Love It:

Penny’s Hill is a winery whose international reputation for quality and wide distribution often suggests a size and scale beyond its boutique stature. Since its inception in 1995, Penny’s Hill has proudly lived up to its moniker, offering wines that are “Proudly Australian – More So McLaren Vale”. This “Cracking Black” Shiraz draws its name from the famous Bay of Biscay soils, which dry and crack along the surface, and which comprise the basis of some of Australia’s most celebrated and sought after winegrowing sites. These soils are known to produce wines, like this new release from Penny’s Hill, which deliver a somewhat more medium-bodied expression of Shiraz, showcasing brilliant freshness, tension and balance. Given the oft-overblown nature of this grape when over-cropped and over-extracted, this infinitely more drinkable version is a welcome relief to those aspiring to finish more than the first half-glass of wine sitting before them.
