[ Why We Love It: ]

Whether you’re looking to diversify – or “deworsify”! – the wine you’re drinking this weekend, this delicious pick is one worth adding to your cart on your next visit to the LCBO. I recently took a bottle of this wine to a leading Canadian wine critic, who more or less told me “Don’t waste a sample on me – I hate Gewurztraminer!”. Having imposed the sum total of my powers of persuasion, I talked the critic into giving it a shot, audaciously suggesting it might change their entire perception of this grape variety. Within a week or two, I heard back – turns out that my confidence was well placed, and this stellar new white wine met with their enthusiastic endorsement in the form of a fabulous review.

Today we’re very pleased to introduce you to a game-changing white; a must-try delicious value pick that we hope you’ll pick to savour over the days and weeks to come. This cool climate white comes fgrom Germany’s Rheinhessen region and packs awesome acidity and freshness, along with Canada Day style aromatic fireworks, drinking perfectly with everything from summer salads to poultry to fish – or as a low alcohol wine to enjoy as a sipper on the patio. So make sure to add this brilliant new white wine to your shopping list this week – and deworsify what you’re drinking, without delay!

[ Tasting Notes: ]

“The Gewürztraminer from Drathen is amazingly refreshing. Some Gewürztraminers are over the top with screaming lychee and rose petals. But this, while full of subtle floral notes, seduces the palate with slightly sweet complexity. Joseph Drathen 2013 Gewurztraminer Kabinett: Honeydew melon, mild lychee nut, honeycomb and lime sorbet aromas tantalize, while off-dry flavours dish up jasmine, clover blossom and quince with a lemon tart finish. Food suggestion: Coconut shrimp or pad Thai.”

“This is a lovely new value addition to the regular listings at the LCBO, riding a fine line between the fresh, lively, citrus side, and the more floral, oily, off-dry style of typical gewürztraminer. A pinch of sugar lengthens and broadens the palate, and makes this a fine match for lightly spiced, aromatic herb-enhanced foods. Modest 11% alcohol adds to the drinkability, while a wet concrete-like minerality adds to the complexity. Drink now. Tasted March 2015.”
